FutureScapes. May 2022

Imagine a society where we step away from the “Cube” and re-envision what a building could look like. I became fascinated with this idea as a response to modern-day architecture and urban design in an attempt to imagine the complete opposition to what we are used to. Imagine what civilization and cities would look like if we never designed rooms as cubes or rectangles. How different would we be as humans if we designed it in a more curvilinear way? Would we feel any different if society was built to reflect the free form of nature instead of the man-made box?

FutureScapes explores realms where the built environment reflects architecture based on organic forms and patterns. These places allude to various areas throughout civilization such as a neighborhood, a rural town, interior spaces, and larger cityscapes.

These landscapes embody a sense of surrealism while being placed in dystopian worlds. A common thread, besides the redesigning of architecture, is that of a very real global crisis question for our future society, how do we design around extreme global warming? In each of these paintings, I re-imagine what civilization would look like if there was no more ground and no more earth. The paintings explore narratives of casual life even within these dystopian worlds where there are still art galleries during an extreme flood or a library and a theater in a society with minimal ground and gravity.

In all, my intentions are for the viewer to observe what the realms are alluding to and create a narrative and imagination of their own. To have the viewer question their current built environment and imagine how they want their future land and cityscapes to be.
